The Secret of Tatting Kells

The movie has just finished. And you know, it was one of those movies that really makes you think A-LOT. We were discussing with my husband that the greatest achievement of this animated movie were the valuable meanings that it was passing along to the audience in just 75 min
"Knowledge is the light against all evil".

I mean, that for sure the cartoon movie "Up" with its mix of comedy and drama was a great movie, but the Oscar for "Best Animated Feature Film of the Year 2009" should have gone to "The Secret of Kells" which was nominated in the same year.

Nevertheless, one thing that I did notice was the graphics that were blending into the movie, graphics that were inspired by Celtic History (It is an Irish production after all), and in particular "celtic knots". I was truly moved by the animation, so as always, I searched the net to find what I can create to enlarge my experience from the movie. And so I fell upon this video by an Italian fellow artist LECOSEDELLAANTO.

The great thing about this creation is of course the trick of two colors that in combination create a very nice effect. The video is very detailed, and you can watch every small move necessary to tat these extraordinaire earrings. Mille grazie amica mia!

From a little search in the internet, I found out that this design probably comes from the Medieval Celtic symbol of "Tree of Life" the critical point on which all forms of life are connected, in heaven and earth. You can find a lot more in this blog "The Emerald Isle"

Of course, I recreate the drawing myself in two combinations of colors, and the result was just great!

It was my very first creation with the combination of two different threads, so I was really happy with the result. You can find these designs also in my Etsy shop, where they are available for sale, in these or in any other combination of colors.

Until next time, keep smiling, and keep tatting!

Tatting Owl night long...

And so, here I am again, sharing with you, one little story from my tatting frivolite experience. If you have started any hobby in your life, you can understand the urge that I was feeling the very first night after the seminar. The urge to put in good use all the tips that I have just learned. And I say the first night, as the whole day I was preoccupied with my full time job, raising and playing and kissing and dreaming with my little prince, my baby boy.

And while I was wondering what I will create, by honing my newly acquired tatting skills, my little prince, started to sing one very specific little kid song...

"I'm a great big owl, as you can see
I live high up in a tree.
All the other birds wake me up when they play,
Because I like to sleep in the day"

The rest is history, and as soon as he slept, I start searching in the net, about an owl tatting pattern. My search was not in vain, in the contrary I was rewarded with a very explanatory walk-through video in Youtube with the title IT'S TIME TO TAT! (Tatted Owls Earrings) by onevirtuouswoman.

It is a very good video as an introduction to beginners in tatting frivolite technique, and probably thats why I used it all that night to produce not one or two earrings, but around ten owls in different colors and sizes. A complete flock by all means or maybe they have a small nest somewhere around the couch or under the tv stand...

Oh! And for some of you that will mention that some of the owls are a little larger than the rest, apart from the fact that these creations are my very first ones and I am very proud of them, you should be aware that "Female owls are larger and heavier than the males of their species."

And as all things are said, I say goodnight to you and keep tatting!!

The Big Tatting Bang...

   And there was the lacing...
I always wanted to create something completely from scratch, but to share with you the truth, I could not find any hobby to channel my imagination. But one cloudy morning, with a coffee in my hands, during one boring, or so I thought at the time, seminar, I found the light, or to say the needles. And just like that, I created my first tatted circle, then twocircles, and before not too long my first tatted earrings.

Tatting Frivolite Seminar
After that, my want for new designs, and consequently for new creations was constantly growing. I must confess that frivolite, or in its most common name tatting, procedure has become one of my most beloved hobbies, as except of the pleasure that it gives me to create new designs, it ιs one of the best ways to clear your mind and fix your inner Feng Shui.

In the next days, I am going to post some of the jewels that I have created since, with the short stories that accompany each one of those.

Be happy and keep smiling.
